SBFD, SBPD, and MIGC Fire crews work together to bring swimmer safely to shore
SURFSIDE BEACH, SC — Surfside Beach Fire Department was dispatched to the pier after a swimmer refused repeated orders from lifeguards to return to shore and later ignored commands from Surfside Beach Police Department.
According to SBFD, crews deployed two jet skis, a swimmer, and three lifeguards to reach the individual, who had moved beyond the pier. Responders reported that the swimmer became hostile and combative, attempting to strike firefighters during the rescue effort.
Murrells Inlet–Garden City Fire District was also dispatched to assist.
Rescue crews monitored the situation until the swimmer became fatigued. Firefighters then used a rescue board to position the individual between the board and the SBFD swimmer, allowing responders to tow him safely back toward the beach. Once the individual reached the beach side, Surfside Beach Police were waiting and took him into custody.
Officials credited the coordinated response between SBFD, SBPD, lifeguards, and MIGC Fire for the successful outcome.
