SUNSET HARBOR — With less than two weeks until America marks its 250th birthday, Sunset Harbor organizers say the community is gearing up for one of its biggest Independence Day celebrations yet — but donations are running behind last year’s total.

According to longtime organizer Roy Daugherty, the annual waterfront fireworks show has grown into a major local tradition, drawing an estimated 500 spectators to the point, along with 25 or more boats that anchor offshore to watch. Residents on nearby Oak Island also enjoy a clear view of the display.

Daugherty said 75 people have contributed so far, but the total amount raised has not yet matched last year’s support. Rising costs mean every contribution matters.

“We will still have a good show, but I’m sure prices have increased,” Daugherty said. “If you can contribute anything, please show your support.”

Multiple ways to donate are available, including:

  • In person through Mr. Runt or Roy Daugherty
  • Cash App: $roydaugjr
  • Zelle: 910‑273‑2199
  • GoFundMe: Sunset Harbor Salutes

Daugherty thanked the community for its continued generosity and emphasized how much the celebration means to the small coastal village.

“Thanks for all you do for Sunset Harbor,” he said.

The fireworks show is expected to once again be a highlight of the region’s Independence Day festivities, continuing a tradition that has become a point of pride for residents and visitors alike.
