SOUTHPORT, N.C. — A major stormwater improvement project is set to begin January 5, 2026, as the City of Southport Public Works Department prepares to replace aging storm drain infrastructure along E. Nash Street between Howe Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Crews will begin work at the Atlantic Avenue intersection and move west toward Howe Street. The project is designed to upgrade critical drainage systems in one of the city’s most traveled corridors.

According to city officials, E. Nash Street will remain open to traffic for most of the construction period. However, two planned road crossings are expected to slow vehicles temporarily. Both ends of the roadway will stay accessible throughout the project, allowing residents and visitors to reach homes, businesses, and downtown destinations.

Street parking along E. Nash Street will be restricted in various locations, with closed off areas shifting daily as work progresses. Temporary driveway closures may also occur, though crews plan to keep these interruptions as short as possible.

The project is expected to take four to 6 weeks to complete, depending on weather and site conditions. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to use caution in the area due to heavy equipment, construction materials, and active work zones.

City officials thank residents and business owners for their patience as Southport continues investing in long‑term stormwater improvements.
