SPEEDING CONCERNS RAISED AFTER I-140 MEDIAN CRASH

Single Vehicle Crash on I-140 near Mile Marker 9 (NVFD - Station 19)

Navassa Fire Officials Warn of Increased Risks to First Responders on ‘Hazardous’ Two-Mile Stretch of Interstate

NAVASSA, NC — First responders from the Navassa Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched Friday afternoon following reports of a vehicle crash on Interstate 140, highlighting growing local concerns over highway safety.

Emergency crews, including Squad 1975, Squad 1981, the department Chief, and the Assistant Chief, responded to the scene near mile marker 9 at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The incident was initially reported to emergency communications as a submerged vehicle. However, the dispatch was downgraded en route. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters discovered a single jackknifed vehicle tangled in the median safety cables.

Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in the crash. The Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) and the State Highway Patrol were requested to the scene to assist with vehicle recovery and traffic management.

A ‘Hazardous’ Stretch of Highway

While the Friday afternoon crash resulted in no injuries, fire officials used the incident to bring attention to the severe dangers emergency personnel face while working on that specific section of the interstate.

According to department leadership, the two-mile stretch of I-140 running through the Navassa district ranks among the most hazardous areas in their entire operating territory.

“There is an increased risk of injury or death for our members due to the speeds we have observed,” the department said in a statement following the response.

First responders are urging motorists to remain alert, reduce their speed, and move over when approaching emergency vehicles operating on the shoulder or median of the highway.
