COLUMBIA, SC — The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a State Forester’s Burning Ban for all counties, effective 4:00 p.m. today, as weather conditions create an unusually high risk for fast‑moving wildfires.
The order prohibits all outdoor burning in unincorporated areas statewide, including yard debris burning, campfires, bonfires, prescribed burns, and other recreational fires.
Fires used solely for cooking or those contained in appropriate enclosures—such as portable outdoor fireplaces, chimineas, or permanent fire pits built of noncombustible materials and compliant with state fire codes—are not included in the ban.
Forestry officials warn that the next several days will bring a “particularly volatile mix” of wildfire conditions. Relative humidity is expected to drop below 20% in some regions, combining with extremely dry fuels and gusty winds to create an environment where fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly.
SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones said the combination of drought, dry vegetation, and storm‑related debris from Hurricane Helene and recent ice damage has increased fuel loads in many areas.
“This burning ban is necessary to limit ignitions to the maximum extent possible to prevent severe wildfires for public safety purposes,” Jones said.
The ban will remain in effect until further notice, with updates to be issued by the Forestry Commission.
