Secret Service says armed suspect tried to breach checkpoint at Washington Hilton
Washington, DC — A shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night prompted the evacuation of President Donald Trump, the First Lady, and senior officials after a man attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton.
According to the Secret Service, the suspect approached the security area armed with a shotgun and a handgun, leading to an exchange of gunfire. One agent was struck in the chest but was protected by a ballistic vest.
The suspect, identified as 31‑year‑old Cole Thomas Allen of Torrance, California, was wounded, subdued, and taken into custody for evaluation and questioning. Authorities say he appeared to be acting alone.
Federal agents with the FBI and Secret Service are continuing the investigation, including a search of Allen’s residence in California. The dinner was canceled following the incident.
