Sheriff’s Office Highlights Youth Engagement Through Community Events and School Partnerships

From Pinewood Derby fun to classroom reading and PBIS recognition, deputies spent the week connecting with students and families across the county.

Pinewood Derby with Cub Scouts Pack 118 – Sheriff Brian Chism spent part of his weekend with Cub Scouts Pack 118 during their annual Pinewood Derby, where he helped present several of the event’s trophies. He said he enjoyed seeing the creativity and hard work that went into each car, as well as the excitement from Scouts and their families.

The Pinewood Derby remains a long‑standing tradition that brings together youth, parents, and volunteers for a day of friendly competition. The Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation to Pack 118 for inviting them to be part of the event and for their continued support of young people in the community.

 

Cruisin’ with Sheriff Chism: PBIS Student Recognized – Fourth grader Izaiah was the latest student selected for Cruisin’ with Sheriff Chism, a program that recognizes positive behavior through the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) initiative in partnership with Brunswick County Schools.

Sheriff Chism picked Izaiah up for a ride to school, shared breakfast with him, and walked him to class to start the morning. Izaiah’s younger brother Gabriel and his parents also joined in, making it a memorable experience for the whole family. Sheriff Chism said spending the morning with them was a highlight of his day and commended Izaiah for his outstanding character.

 

Reading Across America Day at Bolivia Elementary – Sheriff Chism, Chief Deputy Sanders, Lt. C. Barbour, Deputy E. Evans, and Deputy Katz visited Bolivia Elementary School to celebrate Reading Across America Day with kindergarten students. The group read several Dr. Seuss favorites shared plenty of smiles and received more than a few hugs along the way.

Deputies said the annual event is one they always look forward to, offering a meaningful opportunity to connect with students and encourage a love of reading. Reading Across America Day brings community members into classrooms nationwide to promote literacy and support young learners.
