The Sheriff’s Office warns residents of renewed scam calls impersonating law enforcement
Columbus County, NC — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports from citizens about scam phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to represent our agency.
In these calls, the scammer tells the person they have missed jury duty and must immediately send money – often through PayPal or another electronic payment service – to avoid being arrested.
To be absolutely clear:
• The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for payment over the phone.
• Law enforcement will not demand immediate payment or threaten arrest if you do not comply.
• We will not instruct anyone to send money through PayPal, gift cards, or any online payment platform.
If you receive a call like this:
• Hang up immediately
• Do not provide personal or financial information
Scammers rely on panic and urgency to pressure victims. Take a moment, verify the information independently, and remember, if something feels suspicious, it probably is.
