Regions Finalize America 250 Commemorations: Key Summer Events Announced

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — As the United States approaches its historic Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) this summer, communities across the coastal Carolinas are shifting their celebration planning into high gear. Rather than relying on a single, massive regional event, Brunswick, Columbus, and Horry counties have each tailored localized itineraries that reflect their unique roles in early American history, local culture, and community growth.

From living history encampments along the Cape Fear River to drive-in historical festivals and museum exhibits, residents have numerous ways to mark the historic milestone.

Brunswick County: Living History, Reenactments, and Local Icons

Brunswick County’s rich colonial roots place it at the heart of the state’s official “America 250 NC” initiatives. The local schedule heavily emphasizes preserved historic structures and the county’s 45 miles of coastline.

1795 Independence Day Reenactment (Southport): As part of the annual North Carolina 4th of July Festival spanning June 26 through July 4, 2026, organizers at Fort Johnston are hosting a living history event. Reenactors will recreate the town’s very first recorded 1795 Independence Day celebration, complete with a traditional 13-toast ceremonial salute and historic musket-fire demonstrations.
Traveling State Archives Exhibit (Shallotte): On July 15, 2026, the Rourk Branch Library in Shallotte will host a one-day traveling exhibition from the State Archives of North Carolina. Titled “North Carolinians’ Fight for Independence: The Soldier’s Experience,” the display brings authentic, reproduced colonial military records and personal diaries directly to South Brunswick residents.

Columbus County: Family Festivals

Columbus County’s celebrations focus on community gatherings, local agricultural roots, and family-oriented activities that bridge the past with the present.

Summer FEST 2026 (Whiteville): Southeastern Community College (SCC) is partnering with the Columbus County Farmers Market to host a massive, free “America’s 250th Birthday” community festival on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Held on the SCC front lawn, the event is styled after a classic American community carnival, featuring local food trucks, craft vendors, inflatables, and games.
Outdoor History & Cinema Night: The evening at SCC will conclude with an outdoor screening of National Treasure on a giant lawn screen starting at 8:30 p.m. Prior to the movie, local civic achievements will be highlighted to emphasize the county’s modern community impact.

Horry County: Revolutionary War Legacies and Document Displays

Just across the South Carolina state line, Horry County is centering its 250th anniversary activities on historical preservation and honoring its namesake, Revolutionary War hero General Peter Horry.

Revolutionary War Exhibition (Conway): The Horry County Museum (located at 805 Main Street in Conway) has opened a featured 250th anniversary exhibition titled “For the good of our Country and the welfare of our lives, liberties, and fortunes…” The Dynamics of Horry County During the American Revolution. Charters of Freedom Pavilion: Located directly outside the museum, the county’s permanent “Charters of Freedom” brick-and-bronze monument has been upgraded with evening illumination to allow residents night-time access to exact, full-scale replicas of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
Peter Horry Legacy Trails: Historic tours surrounding the Conway Courthouse area are highlighting the Peter Horry historical marker, allowing visitors to walk through the local history of the partisan fighters who served alongside “Swamp Fox” Francis Marion during the southern campaigns of the Revolution.
