Finding of thin‑walled Isoetes species prompts added environmental review in Brunswick County
Bolivia, NC — A rare, prehistoric thin‑walled quillwort (Isoetes sp.) has been identified in Middle Swamp, a wetland system east of Bolivia known for its deep peat soils and slow‑moving blackwater channels. The plant belongs to an ancient lineage that predates many modern species and typically survives only in highly specific wetland conditions.
The discovery highlights the ecological significance of Middle Swamp’s pocosin‑style habitat, where fluctuating water levels and nutrient‑poor soils support species not commonly documented elsewhere in Brunswick County. Because quillworts are sensitive to hydrologic changes, the finding is expected to be incorporated into ongoing environmental review tied to planning work in the area.
Officials have not released the precise location of the plant to protect the habitat.
