Officials urge residents to check yards weekly and remove standing water to stop mosquito breeding
Horry County, SC — With all the rain the area has picked up, it’s the perfect time for reminders on how to keep your home from becoming a mosquito breeding ground. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and it doesn’t take much. Even something as small as a bottle cap can become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae.
Common breeding sites found around homes include toys such as water tables, sprinklers and kiddie pools; buckets, plant saucers and flowerpots; birdbaths; clogged gutters; old tires; tarps; and trash or debris that can collect water after storms.
Mosquitoes develop quickly, so residents are encouraged to check their yards after each storm or at least once a week for standing water. Taking these small steps to remove standing water can help keep mosquitoes away from your home.
