Multi‑agency response keeps damage limited to roof and attic after citizen reports smoke
CALABASH, NC –– A citizen’s quick decision to call 9-1-1 after spotting smoke coming from the roof of a local business late Thursday helped firefighters contain a potentially serious structure fire before it spread.
The call came in just before 11:00 p.m., prompting a multi‑agency response. Calabash Fire Department arrived within minutes, joined by crews from Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and Horry County, SC.
Firefighters worked together to keep the fire confined to the roof and attic area, preventing major damage to the restaurant’s interior.
While units were committed to the scene, Grissettown‑Longwood Fire Department covered the district and handled two additional calls.
Fire officials said the incident is a reminder of how much community awareness matters. Brunswick County’s emergency response system relies on coordination among fire departments, sheriff’s deputies, EMS crews, and telecommunicators – a network that operates around the clock as the region continues to grow.
