With the threat to homes resolved and evacuations lifted, crews focus on extinguishing stubborn hot spots following weekend rainfall.

SHALLOTTE, NC —  The North Carolina Forest Service confirmed Sunday that the Quarry Road Fire is now 50% contained, marking a turning point for the Shallotte community as the incident transitions from active suppression to mop-up operations.

The fire, which broke out on July 10, has been mapped at 283 acres.

To clarify for our readers, “containment” does not mean the fire is half-extinguished; rather, it measures the percentage of the fire’s perimeter that has been successfully enclosed by a fire line or natural barrier to prevent further spread. A higher containment percentage indicates that firefighters have established a more secure perimeter, though they continue to monitor for potential flare-ups until the entire boundary is fully controlled.

A soak of eight-tenths of an inch of rain on Saturday provided critical relief, knocking down flames in lighter fuels. However, officials emphasize that the work continues; firefighters are now systematically addressing deep-seated organic fuels that remain hot and continue to produce smoke.

With no structures threatened and all evacuation orders cleared, the focus has shifted to the long-term stabilization of the perimeter. While the fire is significantly weakened, crews remain on high alert, noting that increasing winds could potentially test the stability of existing fire lines.

Residents can continue to track the fire’s containment progress via the NC Forest Service Wildfire Public Viewer. For urgent updates on local road access and emergency alerts, officials direct the public to the Brunswick County Emergency Management website.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
