South Carolina officials advance major conservation plan as rapid growth reshapes the Grand Strand region.
Conway, SC — South Carolina’s natural resources agency is pursuing a proposal to protect more than 5,000 acres along the Waccamaw River in Horry County, part of a larger effort to expand conservation along the blackwater river system.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is seeking approval to acquire roughly 5,700 acres across several tracts. The land would be added to the Waccamaw River Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area, creating new buffers against development and expanding public access.
Officials say the move comes as Horry County continues to grow rapidly, with the population rising more than 60 percent since 2010.
Conservation groups have long identified the Waccamaw River corridor as a priority due to its ecological value and increasing development pressure.
The proposal still requires additional review and funding approval before any land purchases can proceed.
