WHITEVILLE — A routine proactive patrol by the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Vice/Narcotics Unit led to the arrest of a Whiteville man on multiple drug charges earlier this month.

According to Sheriff W.A. Rogers, detectives were conducting targeted patrols in the Whiteville community on April 6 when they spotted a silver Dodge Ram with an expired registration. Deputies initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as James Graham Hatcher.

During the stop, investigators learned Hatcher had an outstanding warrant for arrest. A further search uncovered cocaine and Clonazepam, a Schedule IV controlled substance, inside the vehicle. Deputies also reported finding an open container of alcohol in the passenger area.

Hatcher was taken into custody without incident and served with the outstanding warrant. He now faces the following charges:

  • Felony possession of cocaine
  • Felony maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substances
  • Misdemeanor simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance
  • Possession of an open container of alcohol in the passenger area

He was issued a secured bond and given a court date.

Sheriff Rogers praised the work of his deputies, saying their proactive approach continues to play a critical role in identifying criminal activity and improving community safety.

“The safety and well-being of our community remain our top priority,” Rogers said. “This arrest is a direct result of continued vigilance and commitment to protecting Columbus County.”

The Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to proactive policing strategies and ongoing partnerships with community members to combat illegal drug activity.
