WHITEVILLE, NC — A busy intersection just south of downtown Whiteville is set for a major safety upgrade as the N.C. Department of Transportation moves forward with plans to build a modern roundabout.
NCDOT has awarded a $1.8 million contract to Highland Paving Co. of Fayetteville to construct the new traffic circle at the angled intersection where Lee Street and Franklin Street meet U.S. 701 Business (South Madison Street). The project will replace the existing traffic signal at a location that sees roughly 16,000 vehicles per day.

Transportation officials say roundabouts have proven to significantly reduce the severity of crashes. Statewide data shows a 79% reduction in fatal and injury collisions at intersections converted from traditional stoplights or stop signs to roundabouts.
Beyond safety, the circular design is expected to improve traffic flow by eliminating the need to wait at a red light. Drivers approaching the intersection will simply yield to vehicles already in the roundabout.
Highland Paving is permitted to begin work in late March, with the project scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
NCDOT says a temporary closure of the intersection will be required at some point during construction. When that occurs, traffic will be detoured along Lee Street, Franklin Street, and Main Street. The agency will announce closure dates in advance on DriveNC.gov, where travelers can search under “Columbus County” for updates.
