Myrtle Beach, SC — Police made several arrests over the weekend after conducting repeated checks of the Myrtle Beach City Hall parking lot, an area that has been posted no loitering for several years.
Officers said they responded to ongoing community concerns about groups gathering in the lot during late‑night hours.
According to police, officers conducted “keep checks” on Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9. During those checks, officers reported observing violations including drinking in public, open containers, and loitering. Also noted the strong lingering odor of ‘Mary Jane’ in the area.
Several individuals were taken into custody on misdemeanor charges. Police also located a missing person during one of the checks and confirmed that the individual was safely recovered.
The parking lot, which sits adjacent to City Hall and near several businesses, has been the subject of repeated enforcement efforts.
Myrtle Beach Police said the posted no‑loitering designation remains in effect and that officers will continue monitoring the area as part of routine patrols.
The weekend arrests prompted discussion among residents and advocates, some of whom expressed concern about enforcement in an area frequented by unhoused individuals. Police said enforcement actions were based on observed violations and not on the presence of any specific group.
A police spokesperson said the department will continue responding to community complaints and conducting checks of posted areas as needed.
