SCHP says a 78‑year‑old Myrtle Beach man was killed when a sedan turned into his path on McCormick Road
Myrtle Beach, SC — A Myrtle Beach man died early Sunday following a two‑vehicle collision in the Forestbrook area, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Horry County Coroner’s Office. The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on July 5 along McCormick Road near Hammerstone Run, a residential street within the Forestbrook community that carries a Myrtle Beach postal address.
The coroner identified the victim as Gary Hersh, 78, of Myrtle Beach. He was transported from the scene to Grand Strand Medical Center, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Highway Patrol investigators report that Hersh was traveling east on his motorcycle when a westbound Nissan sedan attempted a left turn onto Hammerstone Run. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Two passengers in the Nissan were not injured.
The driver of the Nissan, George Franklin Wilhoit, 27, has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. SCHP says the investigation remains active while collision reconstruction and toxicology reviews continue.
No additional charges have been announced. A first court appearance for Wilhoit has not yet been posted in the Horry County Public Index.
