M&M’s Dye‑Free Makeover to Reaches Local Store Shelves

Classic candy to roll out updated colors this summer as companies respond to health‑minded shoppers

BC News Staff Writer

A familiar candy‑aisle staple found in local gas stations and grocery stores is getting a quieter, health‑minded update this summer as M&M’s moves toward dye‑free coloring in select products. The company is preparing to introduce naturally colored versions of the chocolate pieces, a change tied to long‑running concerns from families about artificial dyes and how they appear in everyday snacks.

The shift means the first wave of dye‑free bags will feature a smaller color mix than the traditional six. Red, yellow, orange, and green are expected to remain, while blue and brown are temporarily removed as the company works to match those shades using natural ingredients. Mars, the maker of M&M’s, has said the chocolate itself is unchanged.

The updated candy is planned to reach online retailers first before expanding to wider distribution.

The move reflects a broader trend of national brands adjusting ingredient lists as shoppers look for simpler labels and fewer synthetic additives.

Local families who keep M&M’s on hand for baking, birthday parties, or office candy jars may notice the color shift later this year. The company has indicated it intends to restore the full color lineup once natural alternatives are finalized.
