Melvin Winfred Slaughter, affectionately known as “Wimp,” passed away peacefully at home on June 20, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Wimp lived a full and adventurous life, embracing many careers and opportunities along the way. A proud veteran of the United States Coast Guard, he later served as an officer with the Durham Police Department.
Throughout his life, he worked as a computer programmer for Duke University, owned and operated computer sales and service businesses, worked as a landscaper, and was a pawnbroker. He often joked that he never did anything for more than ten years, a reflection of his curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to take on new challenges.
He was a proud Mason, Elk, and Eagle Scout whose interests and passions were as varied as his career path. Wimp loved spending time on the water boating and fishing, traveling to new places, reading books, listening to music, and testing his knowledge while watching Jeopardy. He enjoyed dancing the shag, playing craps, and was known in his younger years as a talented baseball player. Above all, he treasured time spent with family and friends and never met a stranger.
Wimp is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Slaughter; his sons, Marc Slaughter (Michelle) and Michael Slaughter(Lianna); his stepchildren, Mark Buchanan (Christina) and Michelle Watkins (Matt); his grandchildren, Ceceilia “Ceil” Slaughter and Gabriel Slaughter; his step-grandchildren, Mark Buchanan Jr. (Kelsey), Aaron Buchanan (Tara), Matthew Watkins, and Tyler Watkins (Nichelle); his brothers, Glenn Slaughter (Betsy) and Duke Slaughter (Jenny); and numerous step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia “Ceil” Slaughter, mother of Marc and Michael; and by his parents, Bradsher and Estelle Slaughter.
Wimp will be remembered for his sense of humor, adventurous spirit, love of learning, and devotion to those he loved. His stories, laughter, and generous heart will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Lee Funeral Home and Crematory of Little River is serving the Slaughter family.
