Town Council eyes August meetings to address growing concerns over electric-assisted bike usage
LELAND, NC — The Town of Leland is reviewing potential regulations for e-bikes as the community balances the growth of electric transportation with local safety concerns.
During their June 2026 sessions, council members highlighted the lack of municipal guidelines for electric-assisted devices. Following a directive to research local options, staff are evaluating potential measures, including helmet requirements, minimum age standards, and usage restrictions on shared-use paths and sidewalks.
While state-level legislation regarding e-bike classification remains in committee, Leland officials are moving forward with independent research to ensure public safety. The topic is expected to be addressed further during the August 2026 town meeting cycle as the council continues to evaluate its regulatory path.
Residents can monitor the Town of Leland’s official portal for upcoming meeting agendas to track this issue.
