Lake Waccamaw Approves $11.5 Million Budget with No Tax Increase

Town maintains current tax rate, adjusts utility fees, updates golf cart rules, and finalizes plans for two-time capsules.

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC — The Lake Waccamaw Town Board approved its fiscal year 2027 budget during its June 9 meeting, adopting an all‑funds total of $11,592,546 while keeping the property tax rate at $0.30 per $100 valuation. The rate is based on a projected 98% collection rate, and town officials said the plan maintains essential services without raising taxes.

The town’s largest expense, with police and fire and rescue accounting for the biggest share of General Fund spending. The budget also supports administrative services, zoning, and public works to maintain daily operations throughout the lake community.

Although the tax rate remains unchanged, residents will see increases in water, sewer, and sanitation fees beginning in the new fiscal year. Town leaders said the adjustments are necessary to support system maintenance and rising operational costs.

The board also reviewed updates to the town’s golf cart requirements. Operating an uninspected/uninsured cart will carry a $100 fine. All carts driven within town limits must have valid insurance and display current inspection tags. The annual inspection cycle will shift to July beginning in 2026.

In other business, the council voted to relocate the town’s new time capsule to the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum, where it will be preserved and displayed. The older time capsule will be unearthed and opened during the lakes July 4 celebration, giving residents an opportunity to revisit items sealed away decades ago.
