John Otis Poss – North Myrtle Beach, SC

John Otis Poss, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026 at the age of 74.

Born on April 13, 1952, in Washington, D.C., John was the son of Otis Richard and Regina Welsh Poss.

John proudly served in the United States Army from April 1975 until his retirement in April 1995. During his distinguished 20-year military career, he served his country with honor in assignments across the United States, Europe, and Asia, ultimately retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant following his final assignment at the United States Military Academy at West Point. A highly decorated Soldier, John received numerous awards and commendations in recognition of his exceptional leadership, dedication, professionalism, and faithful service to his country.

Following his military career, John made his home in Myrtle Beach, where he enjoyed the simple things that brought him the greatest happiness. He loved spending time hunting and fishing, never missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved University of South Carolina Gamecocks, and found his greatest joy in a room filled with family, friends and a guitar in his hands.

Music was one of John’s greatest gifts. Whether he was playing solo or alongside his life long friend Tom Tredway…songs like “American Pie,” “The Boxer,” “Puff the Magic Dragon,” or one of the many other songs that became part of family gatherings, everyone seemed to have a favorite John Poss performance. He had an incredible ear for music and an even greater gift for teaching others to play. Through his patience, encouragement, and love of music, he created memories that his family and friends will carry with them forever.

John is survived by his son, John Taylor Poss and his wife, Brandy, and their sons, Tyler and Landon Poss; his daughter, Regina Meconi and her husband, John; his brother, Billy Poss and his wife, Diana, and their son, BJ Poss; and his brother, Rick Poss and his daughter, Daniela Schoelen. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Diane Marsh.

John was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pansy Poss. Through their marriage, he was blessed with a loving blended family and is also survived by his stepdaughters, Kimby Page and her sons, Matthew Gregory and Logan Page; and Lisa Bryson; her son, William Fitzgerald III, and his wife, Amanda. Each became an important part of John’s life, and he loved them as family.

His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the Soldiers he mentored, the music he shared, and the countless lives he touched along the way. So many of those whose lives he impacted came to know him simply as “Dad” or “Pop”…a testament to the love, guidance, and encouragement he freely gave to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Poss Family Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer or any veteran’s charity of your choice, if desired.
