John G. Swan, Jr., affectionately known as “Jack,” passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026 with his son by his side, leaving behind a legacy of service, adventure, love, and laughter.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, Jack lived a life rich with experiences and meaningful relationships, touching countless lives along the way.
Born in Southport, North Carolina, Jack developed an early appreciation for community, family, and the coastal town that would always remain close to his heart. After graduating from The Citadel, he embarked on a distinguished military career, joining the United States Army as an officer and aviator. He was a pioneer in helicopter aviation and was a member of the “Whirlybirds”. With over more than twenty years of honorable service, he led soldiers with integrity and flew aircraft in support of missions around the world. His military career reflected the values he carried throughout his life: dedication, discipline, humility, and a deep sense of duty to others.
Following his retirement from the Army, Jack began a successful second career in the commercial aerospace industry. His professional pursuits took him and his family to Germany and the U.K., exposing them to different cultures, people, and experiences. No matter where life took him, Jack had a remarkable ability to make friends, build community, and leave a lasting impression on those he met.
While his accomplishments were many, Jack’s greatest pride was always his family. He shared a loving marriage with his wife, Lise Swan, who preceded him in death in 2016. Together they created a home filled with love, laughter, adventure, and enduring memories. Their partnership carried them through decades of travel, military assignments, career opportunities, and family milestones.
Jack is survived by his son, Robert Swan, his wife Gina Swan, and their son Ryan Swan of Colorado; and by his daughter, Vicki Jenkins, her husband Frank Jenkins, and their daughter Elise Hansen of Georgia. He is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Hodges of Alabama and Karen Fisher and her husband Paul Fisher of Southport, North Carolina, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Those who knew Jack will remember not only his service and accomplishments but also the joy he brought to everyday life. He was a gifted dancer who never missed an opportunity to take to the dance floor. Whether at weddings, parties, or family gatherings, he moved with confidence and enthusiasm, often encouraging others to join in the fun.
Jack also appreciated life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed a well-made gin martini, especially when shared among family and friends while telling stories and reminiscing about life’s adventures. Conversations with Jack were rarely ordinary; he had a gift for making people feel special and included.
Perhaps one of his most endearing qualities was his creativity when it came to nicknames. Nearly every family member and close friend eventually found themselves the recipient of a unique moniker bestowed by Jack. These nicknames, often humorous and always delivered with affection, became lasting symbols of his love and connection to those around him. They reflected his playful spirit and his ability to make every person feel uniquely valued.
Jack lived with curiosity, resilience, and an adventurous heart. He embraced family values, welcomed new experiences, and found joy in the people around him. His travels around the world, his military and professional accomplishments, and the many friendships he cultivated tell only part of his story. His true legacy is found in the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the family he cherished above all else.
Though his passing leaves a tremendous void, his spirit lives on in the lessons he taught, the stories he told, the traditions he created, and the memories he leaves behind. His family finds comfort knowing that his life was one of purpose, service, and love.
Jack will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew him.
