A cool place to rediscover books — remember those?
By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer
Wilmington, NC — With heat and humidity coming in hot across the region, the annual Summer Book Sale at the Northeast Regional Library in Wilmington arrives at a good time for residents looking to cool off indoors. The event, running July 17–26, features an estimated 50,000 books across dozens of categories, with prices starting at $3.00 for hardbacks and $2.00 for paperbacks on opening weekend.
Library officials say the sale remains one of the largest in southeastern North Carolina, drawing hundreds of volunteers and raising funds for programs and upgrades throughout the New Hanover County Public Library system.
The timing offers a practical benefit. Emergency officials continue urging residents to take breaks from the heat, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Heat exhaustion can develop quickly in high humidity, even when temperatures are below 90 degrees. Indoor community spaces, including libraries, provide reliable cooling options.
The sale is held in the David M. Paynter Assembly Room at the Northeast Regional Library on Military Cutoff Road. Friends Night opens the event July 17 from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., followed by general‑public hours July 18–20 and a second weekend July 24–26, when prices drop to $1.00 hardbacks and 50‑cent paperbacks.
Residents visiting the sale are encouraged to pace themselves, take water breaks, and use the library’s air‑conditioned space as a comfortable retreat from the heat and enjoy their newly adopted hard‑ or soft‑cover book.
