Deputy Miki becomes first apprehension‑trained K9 in Sheriff’s Office history

Horry County, SC — The Horry County Sheriff’s Office has formally welcomed Miki, a four‑year‑old Czech shepherd, as its first K9 trained specifically in suspect apprehension.
Sheriff Phillip Thompson administered the oath during a brief ceremony, with Cpl. Misty Puckett at Miki’s side as he placed his right paw on the Bible.
Miki’s training includes apprehension, tracking, and narcotics detection, expanding the agency’s capabilities during searches at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, high‑risk traffic stops, and warrant operations. The Sheriff’s Office obtained Miki through grant funding and community donations, reflecting strong local support for enhanced public‑safety resources.
After the ceremony, K9 Miki posed for his official headshot – a fitting introduction for the department’s newest deputy.
