Regional leaders meet to strengthen coordination, share updates, and reinforce cross‑border preparedness

Horry County Emergency Management recently hosted the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) Region 4 Quarterly Seminar, bringing together emergency managers and partner organizations from several counties throughout the Pee Dee region.
Horry County’s emergency management program has deep roots in coastal preparedness.
The county formalized its modern Emergency Management Department in the late 20th century as population growth, tourism, and hurricane risk increased along the Grand Strand. Over time, the agency expanded its capabilities in planning, public information, disaster response coordination, and partnerships with local fire, EMS, law enforcement, and state and federal agencies.
Today, Horry County Emergency Management plays a central role in hurricane readiness, flood mitigation, severe weather response, and community resilience initiatives.
Horry County borders North Carolina, its emergency management work also influences nearby communities such as Tabor City and other Columbus County towns.
These areas share the same hurricane and flooding risks, rely on many of the same transportation corridors, and often coordinate on evacuation routes, sheltering, and public information. Cross‑border collaboration ensures that both states can respond more effectively when severe weather threatens the region.
Representatives at the seminar met to discuss current priorities in emergency management, share organizational updates, and strengthen coordination ahead of the 2026 severe weather season.
Participants also heard from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, which highlighted how public–private collaboration can enhance preparedness, response, and community resilience.
Regional meetings like this play a critical role in building relationships, improving communication, and ensuring agencies are ready to work seamlessly when disasters strike.
