Evergreen, NC — A series of competitive, high-stakes “outlaw” turkey shoots is currently drawing local marksmen to a property in the Evergreen community of Columbus County. Operating under the name “The Hay Field,” these recurring bi-weekly events offer substantial cash prize pools for top competitors. Unlike events sanctioned by formal national shooting organizations, these independent competitions are traditional, grassroots gatherings held on private acreage capable of safely accommodating localized target lines.

The events represent a higher-stakes tier of the regional turkey shoot tradition, requiring a total buy-in of $140 per shooter. This entry fee includes a mandatory $120 base fee for the primary six rounds and an optional $20.00 fee for a bonus elimination pot.

The next event in the series is slated for Friday, June 5, at 7105 Princess Ann Road in Evergreen, the evening will feature a 50-foot AA #9 style competition consisting of six standard rounds alongside an optional “Down the Road” elimination round. Gates open for participant practice at 5:30 p.m. with official competitive rounds scheduled to commence at 7:00 p.m.

The financial structure of the competition relies on a strict 70/30 split, meaning 70% of the total pooled buy-in money is paid out directly as cash prizes to the marksmen whose shots land closest to the center of the paper targets. The remaining 30% is retained by the hosts to cover the overhead costs of targets, ammunition coordination, and property maintenance.

Following the June 5 competition, the event series is scheduled to continue throughout the year. Upcoming summer dates include June 19, July 17, July 31, August 7, and August 21, with autumn shoots scheduled for September 4, September 18, October 2, and October 16.
