HALLSBORO, NC — A 23-year-old man is facing serious charges after investigators with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit arrested him in connection with a child sex offense case.
Sterling Robertson, of Hallsboro, was taken into custody on February 9, 2026, following an investigation that began three days earlier. He is charged with:
- Felony Statutory Rape of a Person Under the Age of 15
- Felony Statutory Sexual Offense with a Person Under the Age of 15
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the investigation was launched on February 6 after deputies responded to Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville for a report involving a juvenile victim. Detectives conducted interviews and collected evidence, which led to warrants being issued for Robertson’s arrest.
During the course of the investigation, Robertson was interviewed by detectives and reportedly made additional disclosures regarding other incidents of sexual contact.
He was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.
Sheriff W.A. Rogers thanked the Columbus County District Attorney’s Office for its assistance and emphasized the department’s commitment to protecting children.
“The safety and protection of our children will always remain a top priority for the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office,” Rogers said. “Our Special Victims Unit works tirelessly to investigate crimes against minors and ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
The Sheriff’s Office noted that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and the information released is not intended to express an opinion regarding guilt.
