Local photo prompts confirmation from NC Shark Conservancy
OAK ISLAND, NC — A small, partially intact shark washed ashore near 52nd Street over the holiday weekend, drawing attention after a local resident shared a photo in the Oak Island & Southport Locals Facebook group.
The image, posted by Maggie Denton, shows roughly half of a juvenile shark, with the rear end portion missing. The North Carolina Shark Conservancy reviewed the photo and confirmed the animal was a shark, though the organization has not identified the species or determined what caused the injury.
NCSC notes that partial shark strandings are not unusual along North Carolina’s coast, especially involving very small juveniles. Common causes include post‑mortem scavenging by fish, crabs, or birds, as well as predation from larger marine animals. No evidence suggests the incident reflects any abnormal shark behavior or poses a risk to swimmers.
The specimen was discovered during a weekend of heavy beach traffic, but no additional shark strandings were reported on Oak Island.
