Accidental dosing mistakes are now the primary cause of GLP‑1 medication overdoses, with clinicians noting more cases tied to mismeasured injections and confusion between weekly and daily products.

Health News –– Reports of GLP‑1 overdoses have increased as medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide expand beyond diabetes care. Clinicians say most incidents begin with simple errors: drawing too much from a vial, repeating a dose too soon, or mixing up daily and weekly formulations.

The earliest signs often include escalating nausea and vomiting.

Patients who cannot keep fluids down frequently develop dehydration, marked by dizziness and dark urine. Providers say dehydration is the most common reason patients seek urgent evaluation.

Some cases involve abdominal pain that can resemble pancreatitis, especially when the pain moves toward the back.

Patients using insulin or sulfonylureas may also experience hypoglycemia, presenting as sweating, shakiness, or confusion.

Most overdoses occur immediately after a mismeasured injection or within the next day if a second dose is taken too soon.

Compounded multi‑dose vials have added confusion when unit‑to‑milligram instructions are unclear.

Clinicians encourage patients to review dosing instructions carefully, avoid doubling missed doses, and confirm any changes with their prescriber. Clear measurement and timing remain the most effective safeguards against accidental overdose.
