Frozen Orange Juice Fades from Shelves as Consumer Habits Shift

Why Minute Maid’s exit signals the end of a once‑dominant staple

By BCNews Staff Writer

Frozen orange juice concentrate – once a fixture in American freezers – is disappearing from grocery stores as Minute Maid phases out its entire frozen concentrate line. The move reflects a long decline in demand and marks the end of a product that peaked in popularity more than 50 years ago.

Developed during World War II to supply troops with a stable source of vitamin C, frozen concentrate became a household favorite through the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Families embraced it for its low price, long shelf life, consistent flavor, and convenience at a time when weekly grocery trips and small home freezers were the norm. By the mid‑1970s, frozen concentrate accounted for most of the orange juice consumed in the United States.

Consumer habits began shifting in the late 1980s as refrigerated, ready‑to‑drink orange juice — especially “not from concentrate” varieties — gained traction. These products were marketed as fresher and more natural, and they quickly overtook frozen concentrate. Today, shoppers overwhelmingly choose refrigerated cartons, fresh‑squeezed options, and flavored or functional beverages.

The category decline has been so steep that many store brands quietly reduced or discontinued their frozen OJ years ago. Minute Maid’s exit confirms what retailers have already signaled: frozen concentrate no longer has the sales volume to support large‑scale production.

Local shoppers across Brunswick County, Columbus County, and Horry County, S.C. are already seeing the effects. As Minute Maid winds down production through early 2026, remaining inventory in area stores will disappear quickly, with few private‑label alternatives left.

For many households, the change marks the end of a nostalgic kitchen staple – and a clear sign of how dramatically consumer preferences have shifted since the 1970s.
