Volunteers relocate 111 loggerhead eggs after early‑morning nesting event

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Myrtle Beach recorded its fourth sea turtle nest of the season early Tuesday morning after a female loggerhead came ashore around 5:00 a.m. and laid 111 eggs, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

The nesting followed several false crawls last week, when the turtle came onto the beach but did not find a suitable location to lay her eggs. False crawls are common during nesting season and typically occur when lighting, obstacles, or beach conditions cause a turtle to return to the water without nesting.

To improve the chances of a successful hatch, trained volunteers relocated the eggs to a more secluded section of the Grand Strand. The protected site will remain monitored throughout the incubation period under Marine Turtle Permit 510.

Officials thanked the volunteers who assist with nest identification, relocation, and monitoring each season, noting their role in protecting the region’s loggerhead population.

Beachgoers are reminded to give marked nesting areas plenty of space and to keep the shoreline clean and free of obstacles that could interfere with nesting turtles or emerging hatchlings.
