TABOR CITY — Columbus County deputies seized an Anderson AM‑15 rifle during a Monday afternoon investigation that led to multiple felony charges against a convicted felon.
According to the incident report, the 12:51 p.m. call at 72 Bermuda Bay Lane resulted in charges of Possession of Firearm by Felon, Possession of a Weapon of Mass Destruction, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. The rifle, valued at $800, was recovered by Deputy Jonathan Norris.
The suspect, described as a 36‑year‑old Black male, matches the age and profile of several recent firearm‑related arrests in the county, including the May 4 arrest of Zachary Dasacher Green, who was charged with possessing a stolen firearm and a weapon of mass destruction.
State law classifies an AM‑15‑style rifle as a “weapon of mass destruction” under NCGS 14‑288.8, a statute that covers certain semi‑automatic rifles when possessed by a felon.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the two cases are connected, but both involve stolen long guns and felon‑in‑possession charges — a pattern deputies say has increased countywide since early spring.
