ASHEVILLE, NC – French Broad Chocolates PBC has issued a voluntary recall of its “Bette’s Bake Sale Bonbon Collection” due to undeclared walnuts, according to an announcement posted by the FDA. The recall was triggered after the company discovered a critical labeling error that could pose a life-threatening risk to consumers with tree nut allergies.
The Hazard: A Deadly Mix-Up
The recall centers on a “tasting notes” insert included in the chocolate boxes. In a clerical error, the descriptions for the Walnut Fudge and Peach Cobbler bonbons were swapped.
Because the Walnut Fudge contains tree nuts, a consumer relying on the printed guide could mistakenly eat a walnut-containing chocolate thinking it was the fruit-based Peach Cobbler. For individuals with severe walnut sensitivities, this exposure could result in a serious or fatal allergic reaction.

The recall impacts three sizes of the collection distributed between April 14 and April 20, 2026. Consumers should check their packaging for the following batch numbers:
The chocolates were sold at the company’s retail locations in Asheville, North Carolina, and shipped nationwide via their website to 41 states and the District of Columbia. While no illnesses have been reported to date, the company is urging immediate caution.
The FDA and French Broad Chocolates advise anyone with a tree nut allergy to not consume the product. Affected boxes should be discarded or returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.
