The longtime BCSO Bloodhound is remembered for life‑saving tracks, gentle temperament, and years of dedicated service.
Bolivia, NC — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is mourning the loss of a beloved member of its K9 family. K9 Star, a bloodhound donated to BCSO by the York County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina, passed away after a long and impactful life marked by service, skill, and compassion.
Star served on the BCSO Bloodhound Team for eight years, contributing to countless tracking operations and assisting in multiple life‑saving searches. She helped train new handlers, supported major investigations, and played a vital role in the safe apprehension of criminal suspects.
Sgt. Chris Powell recalls his first successful track with Star, a half‑mile pursuit through dense woods that ended with the safe location of a suspect who had fled from law enforcement. Though the individual was understandably nervous about being found by a K9, Star’s handlers knew her as one of the gentlest, most affectionate hounds to ever wear the badge.
One of Star’s most remarkable achievements came during a search for a woman who had been missing for five days. Working alongside Deputy Walcott, Star tracked through wooded terrain and located the woman alive, bringing relief and hope to a family that had been waiting for a miracle.
Star retired in November 2023 after years of dedicated service to the citizens of Brunswick County. She enjoyed a peaceful retirement and lived to the age of 14.
Though her passing brings heavy hearts, her legacy endures in the handlers she trained, the lives she touched, and the people she helped bring home safely.
