NCDOT says Cape Fear River conditions remain too shallow for safe operation

Kelly, NC — The Elwell Ferry in Bladen County remains closed this week as low water levels on the Cape Fear River continue to prevent safe crossings, according to NCDOT’s latest update.

NCDOT lists the closure as beginning April 28 and continuing through May 5, with both directions of Elwell Ferry Road (SR‑1730) affected.

Drivers will need to detour via NC‑87 until river levels rise enough for the ferry to resume service.

DriveNC.gov will post any changes if conditions shift sooner.
