Bystanders, first responders, and regional partners work together during critical incident on River Road.
On May 27, Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. the Nakina Fire & Rescue and the Tabor City Paramedic QRV were dispatched to the 2100 block of River Road in the Pireway Community for a reported drowning.
Nakina Fire & Rescue unit EMS 10 and Tabor City Paramedic QRV 21 responded. While units were enroute, updated information advised that an elderly patient (name has not yet been disclosed) had been found face down in the river. Bystanders initiated CPR prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, and the person had remained unresponsive.
Due to the severity of the incident, Airlink 2 was requested for rapid transport to a regional trauma center.
Chief 10, Truck 10, and Squad 10 established a landing zone in the 16000 block of Seven Creeks Highway to accommodate the incoming helicopter.
Nakina Fire & Rescue expressed appreciation for the teamwork demonstrated by bystanders, emergency medical personnel, fire department personnel, Airlink, and the residents who allow their properties to be used as landing zones. The department also thanked Columbus County 911 Communications for coordinating resources.
