Dosher Expanded Emergency Department, Delivering Major Upgrade for Local Emergency Care

New facility launched in December 2025, doubling space and modernizing services for Southport and surrounding communities

Southport NC — Dosher Memorial Hospital has completed a major milestone in its long‑term modernization plan with the opening of its new, state‑of‑the‑art Emergency Department in December 2025. The expanded facility replaces the hospital’s decades‑old ER and is designed to meet the rising demand for emergency care across Southport, Oak Island, Caswell Beach, Bald Head Island, and nearby communities.

The new Emergency Department roughly doubles the footprint of the former space, introducing a modern layout that improves patient flow, privacy, and clinical efficiency. The facility features private treatment rooms, dedicated vertical‑care areas for lower‑acuity patients, and a new patient entrance on East 9th Street. Hospital officials say the design supports faster triage, shorter wait times, and a more comfortable experience for both residents and seasonal visitors.

The upgrade was driven by years of steady population growth and increased patient volume. Dosher’s previous ER, built in the 1980s, was no longer suited to current emergency‑care standards or the region’s expanding needs. The older layout relied on semi‑open bays and narrow corridors, limiting privacy and making it difficult to accommodate modern equipment, infection‑control practices, and today’s higher‑acuity cases.

Hospital leadership has emphasized that the new ER is a cornerstone of Dosher’s multi‑year campus improvement plan. The expanded department supports board‑certified emergency physicians and nurses trained in advanced cardiac, pediatric, and stroke‑care protocols, including participation in regional RACE‑STEMI systems for rapid heart‑attack response.

With the new facility fully operational, the former Emergency Department will be repurposed for future clinical or support functions. While the hospital has not yet announced a final use, the space is expected to undergo internal renovation rather than demolition, allowing it to support outpatient services, specialty care, or other patient‑focused needs as part of the ongoing campus modernization.

The opening of the new Emergency Department marks a significant investment in local healthcare infrastructure and strengthens emergency‑care access for the growing coastal region.
