Pireway, N.C. — A long‑debated plan to build a new RV park in the Pireway community moved forward Tuesday after the Columbus County Planning Board voted to recommend approval for the project.
The proposal, submitted by Hubert and Malette Godwin of Chadbourn, seeks a special‑use permit to develop an RV park at 55 Riverview Lane, near the Waccamaw River. The project has been under review for more than a year and has faced repeated delays, including a denial by the Columbus County Board of Adjustment in September 2025.
Tuesday’s hearing again drew opposition from nearby residents. Three property owners from the River Road area urged the board to reject the plan, citing concerns about flooding, the number of existing campgrounds in the area, and the impact on the surrounding community. One resident, who said they have owned property in the area for 23 years, argued the neighborhood “doesn’t need another campground.”
Despite the objections, the Planning Board voted to recommend approval, sending the project to the Columbus County Board of Commissioners, who will make the final decision at an upcoming meeting.
If approved, the RV park would become the latest addition to a growing cluster of campgrounds and recreational sites in the southeastern corner of the county.
