Brunswick County investigators credit local surveillance and inter-state cooperation for the apprehension of two suspects linked to dozens of vehicle break-ins.
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — A massive investigation into a string of overnight vehicle break-ins has ended with two brothers behind bars, thanks to what officials are calling valuable assistance from the local community. Investigators announced that Zachariah Bay and Jacob Bay were taken into custody on April 15 in Horry County, South Carolina.
The arrests follow a week-long manhunt sparked by a wave of thefts that plagued several neighborhoods in southern Brunswick County, including the Northwest Drive area, Spring Mill Plantation, Meadowlands, and Coastal Club.
The breakthrough in the case came after a public plea for help on April 10. Residents responded by providing private video surveillance and critical tips that allowed the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Intel Unit to identify the pair. Authorities emphasized that the engagement of local citizens was the turning point in the probe, directly leading to the identification and eventual apprehension of the suspects.
The takedown was a coordinated multi-agency effort across state lines.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office worked alongside the Horry County Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, Street Crimes Unit, and Patrol Division to locate the brothers. Both Zachariah and Jacob Bay, brothers, are currently being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center as they await the next steps in the legal process.
While the suspects are in custody, the legal fallout is just beginning. As of now, 23 warrants have been obtained, but investigators say that number is expected to climb. Charges are still being calculated as authorities continue to gather additional information from the affected neighborhoods.
Officials stress that this remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional charges may be forthcoming as more evidence is processed.
