WHITEVILLE — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office will hold its annual Peace Officers Memorial Service on Thursday, May 15, honoring local law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the sheriff’s office headquarters at 817 Washington Street in Whiteville. Families of fallen officers, active and retired law enforcement personnel, and members of the public are invited to attend.
Sheriff’s officials said the service is intended as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and never returned home.
The event is part of National Police Week, observed each May across the United States to recognize officers who paid the ultimate price while protecting their communities. Local agencies traditionally gather to read the names of the fallen, lay wreaths, and stand with surviving family members.
The sheriff’s office encouraged residents to attend and show support.
“Your presence matters,” the agency said in its announcement. “Standing together ensures their sacrifice is never forgotten.”
The ceremony is open to the public.
