City of Whiteville Enacts Stage 1 Voluntary Water Shortage Alert

Whiteville NC City Seal

WHITEVILLE, NC — In response to the extreme heat and ongoing drought conditions impacting the region, the City of Whiteville has officially enacted a Stage 1 Voluntary Water Shortage Alert, effective today, July 17, 2026.

According to the latest reports, the area is currently experiencing a Drought Classification 3 (Extreme Drought). To protect available water resources and ensure continued capacity for essential services, including fire protection and drinking water, the city is asking all residential and commercial customers to voluntarily reduce their overall water consumption by 10%.

While the city maintains a robust well system and reports that there are no critical shortages at this time, officials emphasize that this proactive approach is necessary to prevent the need for more stringent measures in the future.

Recommended Voluntary Conservation Measures

The city encourages the community to implement the following practices to assist with these conservation efforts:

  • Outdoor Irrigation: Limit lawn and landscape watering to the absolute minimum.

  • Surface Cleaning: Avoid hosing down impervious surfaces, including driveways, sidewalks, and patios.

  • Vehicle Maintenance: Limit or postpone the washing of personal vehicles and boats.

  • Indoor Usage: Operate clothes washers and dishwashers only with full loads. Promptly repair any dripping faucets, showerheads, or running toilets.

  • Pools and Fountains: Delay the filling of swimming pools, wading pools, and any decorative water features.

City officials will continue to monitor local drought conditions closely and provide further updates as the situation evolves. Residents can track ongoing drought status through the U.S. Drought Monitor of North Carolina.
