Road closures; NCDOT advances 90‑day intersection overhaul
By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer
WHITEVILLE, NC — Construction has officially begun on the long‑planned roundabout at the three‑way Franklin Street, Lee Street, and South Madison Street intersection known locally as the chicken foot.
Work started July 20, and road closures are now in effect as crews move into the first phase of the project.
NCDOT says the redesign will improve safety, reduce congestion, and streamline traffic flow through one of Whiteville’s busiest angled intersections.

The project carries a projected 90‑day completion window, with closures shifting as work progresses.
Real‑time closure updates and detour routes are available through the state’s traffic portal at drivenc.gov.
Businesses located within the construction zone remain accessible throughout the project, though drivers should expect changing traffic patterns and slower travel times as crews continue work on this new Whiteville round-a-bout.
