Officer Assisting Fair Bluff Police Sustains Severe Injuries From Deflation Device Fragments at N.C. 410 Intersection During 130 MPH Chase

CHADBOURN, NC — A Chadbourn Police Department officer is recovering at home following severe injuries sustained during a high-speed, multi-jurisdictional pursuit on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

According to an official statement released by Chadbourn Mayor Phillip Britt, the incident originated when the Fair Bluff Police Department attempted to intercept a suspect vehicle connected to an active investigation in South Carolina. The driver refused to comply, fleeing along U.S. 76 at speeds reaching 130 miles per hour.

As the pursuit entered Chadbourn jurisdiction, local officers moved into an assisting role. Sergeant Johnathan Driggers was positioned at the intersection of N.C. 410 and U.S. 76 to deploy a tire-deflation device in an effort to safely halt the fleeing vehicle.

Official disclosures state that as the suspect vehicle reached the intersection, the driver executed a sudden maneuver to bypass the deflation spikes. The extreme physical force generated at triple-digit speeds caused structural debris from the tactical equipment to strike Sgt. Driggers, resulting in severe injuries.

Understanding the Technology:

Modern “Stop Sticks” differ significantly from older, heavy metal spike strips. They are lightweight, triangular plastic housings containing dozens of hollow, Teflon-coated steel spikes. When a vehicle rolls over them, the spikes detach into the tire to allow a controlled deflation. However, at extreme speeds like 130 mph, any sudden swerve or acute-angle strike can cause the vehicle’s rotating mass to shatter the plastic housing, turning components into high-velocity fragments.

Sgt. Driggers was subsequently airlifted to Duke University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Mayor Britt confirmed that the surgery was successful, and Sgt. Driggers was discharged on Friday, June 5, to continue his recovery at home.

The suspect driver bypassed the checkpoint and remains at large. Due to the active, multi-agency nature of the cross-border investigation, official descriptions and pending charges have not yet been released.
