Brush Fire Contained After Threatening Multiple Structures in Navassa

High winds fueled rapid spread; no injuries reported

NAVASSA, NC — Station 19 crews responded to a brush fire near Cedar Hill Road and Wide Way on February 7, after reports of flames threatening nearby structures. Firefighters arrived to find a detached storage shed burning and several additional buildings in immediate danger as strong winds pushed the fire toward an estimated 15–20 structures.

Additional resources were requested as the fire spread quickly through surrounding brush. Crews brought the incident under control, and no injuries were reported. Aside from the shed, no other structures were lost.

Officials estimate that 20–25 acres of brush burned.

Navassa VFD responded with Engine 1972, Tanker 1974, Tanker/Service 1978, Brush 1976, Brush 1977, Squad 1975 (brush mode), and Squad 1981. Responding personnel included Firefighters Wright, Mohamed, Whaley, Miranda, Malone, Miller, Rodriguez, Mosley, and D’Alesio, along with Captain Thornton and Chief Williams.

Mutual aid and support were provided by agencies across Brunswick, Pender, New Hanover, and Columbus counties, including the Town of Navassa, Leland Fire Department, Winnabow VFD, New Hanover County Fire & Rescue, Pender Fire & EMS, Wilmington Fire Department, Northwest VFD, Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire & Rescue, Brunswick County EMS, Brunswick County 911, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the N.C. Forest Service, and Duke Energy.
