(UPDATE) Brunswick County Woods Fire Grows Near Ocean Isle; Smoke Drifting Into Grand Strand

Ocean Isle Beach, NC — A rapidly growing woods fire is burning tonight near Ocean Isle Beach, centered along NC‑179 and Hale Swamp Road, according to early reports from fire officials on scene. Crews are actively working to contain the fire and protect nearby homes as shifting winds push smoke toward coastal communities.

Fire Location & Activity
– The fire is burning in a heavily wooded area off NC‑179 near Hale Swamp Road.
– Fire officials report rapid growth due to dry conditions and gusty winds.
– Units are positioned around nearby neighborhoods to protect homes as containment lines are built.

Statewide Burn Ban in Effect
North Carolina is currently under a statewide burn ban affecting all 100 counties, prohibiting all open burning due to elevated wildfire risk. Officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning and to report smoke or fire concerns immediately.

Smoke Impact: Grand Strand
Smoke from the Brunswick County fire is expected to drift south into the Grand Strand, especially:
– North Myrtle Beach
– Little River
– Nearby inland communities

Residents in these areas may notice haze and the smell of smoke depending on wind direction overnight.
