Brunswick County Emerges as Contender for High‑Value Minerals Processing Facility

These deep‑sea nodules, found far offshore in the Pacific, contain metals used in batteries and defense technology. They would be processed on land if Brunswick County is chosen for Project Infinity.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — Brunswick County has been identified as one of four finalist locations under consideration for a proposed critical minerals processing facility that developers say would be the first of its kind in the United States.

The project, known as Project Infinity, was announced on June 15 by Glomar Minerals, a U.S. seabed minerals company, and Cobalt Blue Holdings Limited, an Australian critical‑minerals firm.

According to the companies, Brunswick County is being evaluated alongside two sites in the New Orleans region and one site on the Texas Gulf Coast.

If constructed, the facility would process polymetallic nodules collected from the deep seafloor into strategic metals used in manufacturing, defense applications, and energy technology. These nodules naturally contain nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese  minerals the United States currently relies heavily on foreign sources to supply.

The companies describe Project Infinity as a potential first‑in‑the‑nation operation capable of refining deep‑sea nodules at commercial scale. The nodules would be collected in the Pacific Ocean, where known deposits exist in international waters regulated by the International Seabed Authority. They would then be shipped to the United States for processing. No deep‑sea mining or offshore activity is proposed anywhere near North Carolina, and no extraction would occur off the state’s coast.

Brunswick County’s proximity to the Port of Wilmington, access to major transportation corridors, and availability of industrial‑zoned land are among the factors that make the county a candidate for the project.

The companies have not identified a specific site within the county, and no environmental permit applications or local planning submissions have been filed.

Project Infinity remains in the early evaluation phase. A final site selection will follow feasibility assessments and environmental reviews. No construction has been approved.
