Municipal and County Burn Bans Remain in Effect; Stage 2 Water Restrictions Implemented
By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer
Brunswick County, NC –– As the region moves into July 2026, fire safety remains a top priority across Brunswick County. Both countywide and municipal burn bans remain strictly in effect, with no rescission notices issued as of June 29, 2026. These precautions are bolstered by the recent implementation of a Stage 2 Mandatory Water Conservation Alert, prompted by worsening drought conditions.
Countywide Restrictions The burn ban for all unincorporated areas, issued by the Brunswick County Fire Marshal on June 8 at 5 p.m., remains active. The order prohibits all open burning within 100 feet of any structure. Residents should note that while the burning of natural vegetation outside of that 100-foot radius continues to follow N.C. Forest Service permit requirements, the current drought conditions necessitate extreme caution.
To date, no notice to lift these restrictions has been posted by county officials.
Municipal Burn Bans Several Brunswick County municipalities continue to enforce independent burn bans. As of today, the following towns have confirmed that their restrictions remain active through official fire department or town government channels:
-
Oak Island
-
Leland
-
Shallotte
-
Boiling Spring Lakes
-
Bald Head Island
-
Sunset Beach
-
St. James
-
Southport
Unincorporated Communities Covered The countywide ban applies to all unincorporated communities, which remain under the direct authority of the Brunswick County Fire Marshal and the N.C. Forest Service. These areas include:
Supply, Ash, Winnabow, Longwood, Sunset Harbor, Grissettown, Exum, Freeland, Maco, Bell Swamp, Civietown, New Britton, Mill Creek, Royal Oak, Farmers Union, Phoenix, Gause Landing, the Boiling Spring Road area, and the mainland portions of Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach.
Residents are urged to stay updated on both fire safety protocols and the ongoing Stage 2 water conservation measures as the Independence Day holiday approaches.
