Deputy Forbes and K9 Pepper track and locate runaway teen

A Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Bloodhound team located a missing 15-year-old girl after she ran away and had been gone for about an hour — marking the first recovery for Deputy Robin Forbes and K9 Pepper.

Deputy Forbes collected a scent article from the teen’s backpack using the absorption method before deploying Pepper, a scent‑discriminate Bloodhound. Pepper trailed past a trailer, into the woods, and through a neighbor’s yard with loud dogs, staying locked on the target scent.

The North Carolina Bloodhound team continued into the woods to a shed, where deputies heard a loud thump. A backup handler checked inside and found the teen hiding in a stack of tires. The track measured just under 400 yards.

Forbes and Pepper recently attended the Scent Evidence K9 North Carolina Trailing Seminar, and this successful find marks their first search recovery as a team.

Scent Evidence K9 thanked the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office for its commitment to public safety and bringing the lost home.
